Hitch ski and snowboard carriers offer a great alternative to carriers mounted on the roof. Both Yakima's HitchSki and Thule's Tram can carry up to 6 skis or 4 snowboards, or a combination. They are lockable as well. They do require a hanging style 4 or 5 bike hitch rack to use.
