A cargo box carries skis, poles, boots and wet bags out of the weather, and it is the one winter carrier that still earns its place in July. Length is the thing to check first: the long boxes, the Yakima SkyBox 18, GrandTour 18 and CBX 18 and the Thule Motion XT XL, take adult skis comfortably, while the shorter and wedge-shaped boxes suit boards, boots and bags better than long skis.
