There are three ways to get skis and snowboards to the mountain, and the right one depends on what is already on your car. A roof carrier clamps to crossbars, holds two to six pairs and locks; it is the cheapest route if you already have bars. A hitch carrier keeps everything at waist height and off a wet roof, though every hitch ski carrier is an adapter that mounts to a bike rack or hitch base you already own. A cargo box swallows skis, poles, boots and wet bags out of the weather, and is the only one that still earns its place in July.
