How can I identify if I have a Class III hitch?
Typically the hitch receiver itself will have a sticker with that information printed on it. If that has been removed, search around on the hitch for a part number that could looked up to find out the Class of the hitch. If there are no indicators as to the model or class of your hitch receiver, we recommend stopping by a shop local to you that installs hitch receivers as they might be able to identify this by characteristics of the receiver.
Can the BackSwing be used as an extension for a Jeep with a spare tire so that a bike rack will clear the tire?
Of course, however there are a few things to consider. You will want make sure that the tongue on the bike rack you would like to use has a true 2" tongue, not a 1.25" tongue with a 2" adapter sleeve over top. The reason for this is the BackSwing is extending the distance the bike rack protrudes from the vehicle, which in turn creates more stress on the tongue of the rack. The 2" adapter sleeves are commonly installed with one or two set screws that potentially could sheer off from the extra stress. If the rack checks out, the other thing to look into before purchasing the BackSwing would be that your hitch receiver is Class III. or above. This essentially is the rating of how strong the hitch is and can typically be found on a sticker located on the hitch itself.
Is there a model of the BackSwing that swings to the drivers side?
Yakima, as well as other brands we carry do not make a swing base that opens towards the drivers side. The reason being that if you were to pull over on the side of the road and need to access the rear of the vehicle, the hitch system would be swinging into the road potentially causing an accident. Instead it safely opens towards the passenger side to help prevent this from occurring.
