Flush rails run front to back along the roof and sit tight against it, with no gap to pass a strap or your hand under. They are common on European wagons and on most recent SUVs, and they are the roof type people most often misidentify: if you can get your fingers under the rail, you have raised rails instead, and a different foot pack.

The rack clamps into the rail itself with a fit kit cut for your vehicle, so the clamp matches the rail's profile and length. Thule and Yakima each make their own and they are not interchangeable.
