A roof carrier is the standard way to carry skis: clamp it to your crossbars, load two to six pairs, lock it, and the trunk and the hitch stay free. Two things decide which one. Capacity is quoted in pairs of skis, and snowboards take roughly half again the room. Loading height is the other: the Kuat Grip slides out past the edge of the roof, which is worth the money on a tall SUV when you are holding an armful of skis.
